"GUN FOR GUN" DENIED.

ITALY'S FORTIFICATION. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, October 8. A message from Paris asserts that M. Painleve, Minister of War, confirms the interview regarding the fortification of the Italian frontier with the exception of the phrase "Gun for gun," which was inadvertently attributed to him. The interview referred to took place on October 2, with a representative of the British United Press. M. Painleve stated that as Italy was hastening the work of fortification on her frontier, it was only common sense that France should keep up with her. Italy had begun the race, and, all the way from the Mediterranean to Mont Blanc, France would match her, gun for gun.
