VERMIN IN AUCKLAND.
I was very much interested in "Citizen's" account of his experiences with rats and fl—w. I have sympathy with him because only oa Friday I wrote out a notice to my landlord to quit his rat and flea-bitten house after one month's almighty battle with these noisy and ferocious animals. I can claim to go oaa better than "Citizen," for my house is tka stronghold of the ant species. There are billions of them. I have squirted pyrene ont of the fire extinguisher on them, and they sit up and ask for more. We have a bed which tb* fleas have actually chased us out of, whidi we call the Tlea-Bitten DenWe have put paper under the door so that they may keep to their own particular quarters while "we do battle elsewhere. My house is a double-decker, and as I write these lines the rats are squealing around the walls and beneath the floors. They seem also to be playing at leapfrog. I saw two beauties last night in the fireplace, as a New Zealander would describe them, they were a couple of 'cows'." Speaking as & Canadian, I am used to seeing furry «nim«h but these have been well frosted and an healthy. I quite agree with "Citizen" that sooner or later a terrible epidemic may strike this fair city, and the rats will bring it. They brought the Black Plague to London, »ib| I know from experience they are responsible for untold deaths in South America. I honestly hope and trust Auckland will be saved from such a catastrophe.
