"DON'T TELL ANYONE."
"I really don't think I am capable of it," said a man who had been offered an important post. "Don't tell anyone," advised a sensible friend, "and nobody will know." That friend had learnt that the world mostly takes us at our own valuation. If we shrink from responsibility it concludes we are not fit for it. If we are content with humble jobs it does not put big ones in our way. There is nothing to be ashamed of in feeling that we are inadequate. Only conceited fools imagine themselves perfect. But it is a sign of weakness to confess inadequacy. It is by trying with all our might to accomplish tasks that are slightly beyond our strength or outside our experience thst we grow in power and enlarge our grasp. —L.C.
