AMATEUR WRESTLING.

CONTESTS AT RAETIHI. HIGH STANDARD SHOWN. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") ■ RAETIHI, Saturday. A record crowd attended tfte contests for the amateur heavy, middle land lightweight wrestling championships at the Drill Hall last night. The entries were representative, first-class wrestling resulting. Mr. J. B. Ferguson, of Palmerston North, acted as referee, Mr. A. W. Ashwell as timekeeper, .and Mr. W. H. Sandford as announcer. In the semi-finals and finals of the heavy and middleweight classes, an exceptionally high standard of wrestling was shown.- D. Scarrow won the heavyweight championship, Alec Anderson (Palmerston North), the middleweight division, and E. Podjuisky (Turakina) the lightweight title. Mr. R. W. Smith, M.P., presenting the cups at the close of the contests, congratulated the competitors on their splendid showing, and thanked Mr. G. A. CL McDonald, {honorary instructor of the Raetihi Club for his good work in the interests of the game.

Results were as follows:— Lightweights. Jones, lOst (To Awamutu) beat Cunningham, tet 131b (Raetihi), with falls in the first and third -rounds. £. Podjuisky, 9st 131b (Turakina) met Jones in the final and defeated him in the first round with a bar hold and a neck and arm roll.

Middleweights. Alec Anderson, list 51b (Palmerston North) defeated L. List, list 61b (Raetihi) with two falls in the first round. T. Whenham, list (Te Awamutu) beat E. Podjuisky (Turakina) in the second bout with falls in the first round. The final between T. Whenham and Alec Anderson was one of the best bouts of the evening, the wrestling being even practically all the way through. Anderson tried neck holds repeatedly, but Whenham cleverly extricated himself from difficulties. Time after time Whenham secured a scissors hold on Anderson, almost obtaining a fall. Anderson showed finished wrestling in breaking away. The 'first and third round? were Anderson's and the second even. Anderson was awarded the decision on points, gaining the championship.

Heavyweights. The most interesting and spectacular display of the evening was provided i by the heavyweights. In the first bout Anderson, 12st 71b (Raetihi) was defeated by W. Bayne, 12st 81b (Te Awamutu) on points, after three hard rounds. J. Webb, 12st 101b (Raetihi) defeated Alec Scarrow, lost (Raetihi) with a fail from a head and arm roll in the second round. D. Scarrow, 14st 21b (Raetih;), the holder of the title, gained a decision over Alec Anderson (Palmerston North) with two falls in the second round.' Alec Scarrow met Albert Scarrow in a no decision bout. In the semirfinals, J. Webb, after a hard bout, defeated Albert Scarrow with falls from scissors and a half nelson in the first round, and a waist-hold in the second round. The match between D. Scarrow and W. Bayne proved the most exciting bout of the evening. In the first round, both opened cautiously. The second and third rounds were moat the contestants trying for falls from waist -hold * and arm rolls. The refere* was unabl-i to give a decision, and ordered another, round. Scarrow was aggrefcsive throughout, and Was too strong for Bayne, being awarded the decision oa points. : In-the final between D. Scarrow and W. Webb, the latter attacked strongly in the first round, bringing Scarrow t*> the mat with an arm roll, Scarrow retaliated with a neck hold In the see* ond round, but Webb threw him twice.
