OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, Saturday. At Thursday's meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council the Minister of Railways replied to the council's request, through Mr. A. M. Samuel, to have about two miles of the railway line between Tirohia and Mangaiti moved to higher ground, so as to avoid dislocation of traffle during flood times. The Minister agreed that the line could be deviated to higher ground, but this would entail heavy earthwork and the building of three bridges, the whole work costing £40.000. An alternative was to raise the present embankment 4ft. at a cost of £15,000. Owing to the little damage suffered through flooding and the slight dislocation of the service, it was considered that neither of these expenditures was justified. Owing to the Department having in view another route to the Ohlnemuri gold and silver mines, the Minister refused the council's application for a grant of £500 to re-con-dition Maratoto Road. In reply to the concern voiced by the council at the erosion taking place at the Hikutaia Stream Bridge, the resident Public Works engineer stated that much detail work would be necessary to discover the extent and cause of the scour. From a casual Inspection he did not consider there was any pressing danger to the road. In consideration of the Public Works Department undertaking to maintain for three years Bjerring's and Ross' deviations on the Wnihi-Whangamata Road, the council resolved to pay to the Department all general rates received from property in this area during that period, and henceforth would not apply, tpjr assistance from thei I Department towards easts of the deviations.
