ROOF LIFTED OFF.
HOUSE STRUCK BY TORNADO.] TWO OTHERS DAMAGED. CHIMNEYS LEVELLED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A fierce gust of wind shortly after nine o'clock this morning lifted the roof from the house of Mrs. Emily Kate Alderson, 119, Moxham Avenue, Hataitai. Timber and tiles were deposited on two neighbours' houses 30 feet away. Portion of the roof broke up in the air and the tiles Mew all directions. The two damaged houses were those of Mrs. Birch, 121, and Mr. King, 123. The Aldersons had to start shifting quickly to save their furniture from damage by heavy rain which threatened. All the chimneys on Mrs. Birch's house were levelled, and at 12.30 p.m. another house was rapidly losing its roof, but nobody was at home. Fortunately the whole occurrence was without accident, the children all being at school, and there being few pedestrians about. The wind was tornado force, but it was confined practically to one spot.
