Messrs. P. C. Minns and E. E. Bailey were selected as the Auckland candidates for Rhodes scholarship honours for 1928 by the Professorial Board of the Auckland University College this morning. Both candidates have excellent scholastic and athletic records. Mr. P. C. was born on October 1, 1907, and is the well-known 'Varsity footballer who gained representative honours and was selected to represent New Zealand against New South Wales in the first Test. As a runner he has also gained success. He won a Junior National Scholarship in 1920 and commenced his secondary school training at the Auckland Grammar School the following year. He matriculated in 1923 and in 1924 annexed a Junior National Scholarship and the Kenneth Commons prize for languages and the Eric H. Astley prize for mathematics and science. He is at present in his final year for the BJL degree. Mr. Bailey was also born in 1907 and is an Auckland boy. His primary school training was had at Mackeytown (near Waihi), Bayfield (Heme Bay) and Otahuhu Convent Schools. He was a pupil at the Sacred Heart College from 1&20 to 1923 and has been a student at the University College since 1924. He is employed as law clerk by the firm of Messrs. Fitchett, Bees and Lux ford. In 1919, while attending the Otahuhu Convent, he gained a Junior Free Place, and a Federation Scholarship earned him three years at Sacred Heart College. He soon made his mark at the latter institution, and in his first year, 1920, won a Junior National Scholarship. In the two succeeding years he was dux of the school and passed the Junior University Scholarship examination, and was sixth in New Zealand on the list for National Scholarships. He qualified as a solicitor at the age of 19 in 1927 and completed his LL.B. degree. This year he is sitting for his LL.M. degree in contracts and torts, company law and jurisprudence, and was called to the Bar. He represented the University against the Ameri-j can debaters, and was a member of the college fifteen that recently visited Fiji. He is also a keen tennis enthusiast.
