OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

In connection with a proposal to remove about two miles of the Paerna-Te Aroha railway line to higher country to nvoid disorganisation of tho traffic at .flood periods, the Minister of Hallways informed Obinemurl County - Council that it would be impossible to deviate the line alon« the edge of the swamp countrv. This would-, necessitate the erection of throe bridges and would cost £40,000. An alternative solution of the problem was the raising of the line to a height of 4ft above the maximum flood level. This would cost £15,000. The track had been practically undamaged in the recent floods, and in view of the comparatively slight delay occasioned to the service, it was not thought that tut expense of raising the line was justified. A request for a grant of £500 toward tho cost of repairs to the Mnrototo Timid to the Ohinemuri Gold and Silver Mines was declined by the Department, in view of the uncertainty of the prospects of (ho mine, and the fact that arrangements were in hand to clear another route to the battery, by which stores could be carted.
