POTATO PRICES.
PARTLY ARTIFICIAL. EFFECT OF SPECULATION. (By Telegraphs—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. When the attention of the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. O. J. Hawken) was called to the high price of potatoes, he informed members of tlje House of Representatives that there was no doubt this commodity was very dear. Under the regulations it was impossible to import supplies from Australia if there was disease, and for this reason merchants had not been able to import. It was not the intention of the Government to alter the regulations, but, no doubt, in about a fortnight's time the situation would be relieved by the arrival of new potatoes. "There has been a certain amount of speculation, and it is difficult to say whether there are sufficient old potatoes to last until that time," added Mr. Hawken, "but my information is that there are sufficient, and that to a certain extent the price is artificial."
