WATER ADDED TO BRANDY.

PUBLICAN'S ADMISSION. TWO MEN HEAVILY FINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) THAMES, this day. The admission that he had added 40 per cent of water to brandy, and 35.6 per cent and 26.5 per cent of water to whisky and gin respectively, was made by John Kelly, hotelkeeper, Thames, in the Police Court this morning. Counsel for the Department (Mr. V. N. Hubble) characterised it as the worst case he had had, and the Department had had many bad ones. There were seven charges, four under the Licensing Act and three under the Pure Foods Act. Finally the Crown agreed to substitute two charges under the Food Act for two under the Licensing Act. The minimum penalty under the latter Aot is £20. Mr. Platts, S.M, stating that the offence was very serious, fined Kelly £50 and costs totalling £13 14/. Another publican, Walter Bell, was charged with similar offences. He had added water in the percentages of. 27.8 and 12.8. He was fined £40 and costs £9 2/.
