ONEHUNGA BURGLARY.

MAORI PRISONER REMANDED.

SECOND MAN'S IDENTITY.

WAS NEARLY CAPTURED.

William Matthews, the Maori who was caught on the roof of Mr. Osborne's shop in Princes Street, Onehunga, on Wednesday night, came before the Onehunga Court yesterday afternoon. After being formally charged he was remanded for a week by the presiding justice, Mr. J. E. Green, at the request of Sergeant J. A. Cruickshank.

It is now clear that there were two men involved in the attempt on Mr. Osborne's property. The Maori's statement that the other fellow was tall and slim is born out by the fact that Mr. Young, who was the first to see the Maori on the roof, had also seen the other inan bolt over a fence.

Mr. Young had been watehing the premises for some time and went to the rear of the shop when Mrs. Portland (now Mrs. Young) first saw the light in the shop. He saw the white man emerge and grabbed hold of his shoulder, but was unable to detain him. However, he had a good look into his face and state 3 that he would recognise the man again anywhere.

A searchlight and some tools that could be used to break into a building were found on the premises.
