CYCLING.

FIFTY-MILE RACE.

AMATEUR ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP.

Auckland's premier amateur road classic, over 50 miles, will on Saturday, under the auspices ihe Manukau Amateur Cycling Club. The entry, which is a record one of 51, indicates the p roogress amateur cycling has made during the past year. This year's event should Iks a particularly interesting one, as it contains all the cracks of any note racing at the present time. The course is considered one of the finest in the Dominion, containing just that sprinkling of hills that finds out the weak spots in all riders. Starting from Sir Johu Logan Campbell's monument, riders go via' Market Street to Great South Road, thence to Papakura, turn to the left into Wairoa Road, then straight to Bull's corner, take the left road here to approach Clevedon, and just before entering the town turn sharp to the right and follow back to Bull's corner. From this point the return journey is over the same route as the outward trip. The idea of "doing the block" at Clevedon is to obviate the possibility of any rider seeing the "other fellow" when they start on the return trip, and thus knowing their respective positions. Mr. R. Jackson's adjustments appear to make the race a back-marker's one, unless the six, seven, and eight-minute riders work well together. Whilst sorting out the back-markers, J. Wade, J. Whitten (scr), and H. Dwight or F. G. Casey (2m), as likely ones to fill the first three places, there is every chance of the six-minute riders, Stewart, W. Dwight, Pinker, Tomlinson, and Bircombe—all good solid riders —providing the winner. On the eight-minute mark is the favourite, C. A. Clarke, with H. Russell, A. L. Russell, and D. Fletcher. The finish is expected to take place at the starting point (Sir John Logan Campbell's monument) at about 4.15 p.m., w hen Mrs. G. W. Cleaver will present the winner of the championship with the champion sash and medal.
