NEW HAURAKI SEAT.

MR. DE MONTALK WITHDRAWS. One of the first to announce his candidature for the new Hauraki electorate, Mr. J. S. de Montalk, of Otahuhu, has now decided to withdraw from the contest. He was to have stood as a Liberal, and if successful to have followed the leadership of Sir Joseph Ward. The decision of Sir Joseph since his return from England to become the leader of the United party, however, has caused a complication. Mr. E. Allan having been selected as the United party candidate for Hauraki, the general organiser in Wellington (Mr. A. E. Davey) asked Mr. de Montalk to consider standing for the party for the Franklin electorate. This Mr. de Montalk prefers not to do, and so for the time being he will postpone his efforts for Parliamentary honours. He is a wellknown business man and a member of the Otahuhu Borough Council.
