SEPTEMBER'S RECORD

RAINFALL,

GALES AND THUNDERSTORMS

Severe westerly gales and thunderstorms resulted in the September rainfall exceeding the record for the past 76 years, states the Government observer, Mr. H. M. Vincent. The total rainfall was 7.S4in. as against the average of 3.56 in. The previous Record was in ISGS, when 7.45 in fell during September. The rainfall for September of last year was also above the average, totalling 4.31 in. Rain fell on 23 days, but the heaviest fall for 24 hours occurred on September 6. when the gauge'showed 1.47 in. There were other very heavy downpours, especially during the westerly gale whic-h raged from September 22 to September 27. In spite of the rain, however, there was only one day on which no sunshine was recorded, while the total sunshine was 134 hours 5 minutes.
