PRISONERS SENTENCED.
PROBATION FOR CATTLE THIEF
YOUTH S FALSE DECLARATION
Three prisoners appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Smith in the Supreme Court this morning. Charles West (Mr. Dromgool) was admitted to probation for two years for the theft of four cows, valued at £48, from the Te Puke district. His Honor said that it was difficult to giant probation to a person who had no fixed place of abode, but was wandering up and down the country. Counsel stated that the prisoner, if permitted, would return and reside in the Te Puke district. He had already been in custody for three months while the police had been making further inquiries. A line or £10, to be paid in instalments of £5 at periods of three months, was imposed on a young man, George Douglas Campbell, who had pleaded guilty to making a false declaration to the registrar of marriages for the purpose of obtaining a marriage certificate. Mr. Singer, for the prisoner, said his client was 19 in June of last year, and for the purpose of getting married in February had declared himself to be 24. The lady of his choice was appreciably older than Campbell, and the penaltie's which he would have to undergo in future years might be deemed sufficient punishment. In the case of Claude Albert Johnson (Mr. J. J. Sullivan), who had been committed from Paeroa on a charge of incest, an adjournment for a fortnight was agreed to in order that the prisoner 'Might be medically examined.
