SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A delightful bridge party was .aiven by Dr. and Mrs. E. Williams, Remuera, on Saturday evening. All shades of flowers were used for the drawing and dining rooms. The hostess wore a black and white beaded georgette. Among the guests were: Dr. and Mrs. Griffin, Dr. Kirker, Mrs. J. H. Wood, Mrs.. G. Devore, Dr. and Mrs. K. blacky, Mrs. W. A. Gunn, Mrs. V. R. Meredith, Mr. and ills. F. K. Hunt, Mr. and Mrs., D. Metcalfe, Dr. A. Knight, Mrs. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. H. Corbett, Mr. and Mrs. Moorehouse.
Scots Hall was gay with the laughter and pretty frocks of 300 pupils, many being in fancy dress. The occasion was a farewell party given by Miss Mabel Johnson, of Remuera, prior to her departure for a six months' holiday to England and the Continent. Many interesting and excellently performed items were given by the senior and junior pupils, and the presentation was made to Miss Johnson of a pair of field glasses. ,The hostess wore a black jetted net and taffeta frock, and carried ashaded red bouquet presented by the pupils.
The Kitchener Park Tennis Club held •its official opening day on Saturday, when the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Williamson (who was introduced by the president of the club, Mr. C. F. Kingsford), formally declared the courts open for the coming season. Mr. Williamson complimented them on the appearance of the courts and expressed his sorrow at the gradual disappearance of what would have made fine playing areas in and around Takapuna. He hoped they would long be in possession of such beautifully-situated tennis courts and then declared them open for play. A competition for double Rets for a prize given by Mr. C. F. Kingsford was arranged for the afternoon's play. • • • •
The Swanson branch of the Women's Institute held their monthly, meeting on Wednesday last. The birthday of the institute falling upon the same date a gorgeous cake, made by Mrs. Insley, of Swanson, had the place of honour. The guest of the day was Miss Jerome Spencer, organiser of New Zealand Women's Institutes. After cutting the cake Miss Spencer made a short speech extolling the spirit of friendship and help which was the basis of the institute. Mrs. Kennings, of Devonport, gave a beautifully illustrative address upon organdi flower-making, some exquisite blooms being shown. There was a large attendance, including some visiting members from Henderson.
A surprise reception was paid to Mrs. C. G. Macindoe at her home, "Ayala," Westbourne Boad, Remuera, on Saturday evening, to celebrate the wonderful win of her husband's horse, Prince Humphrey, which won the Australian Jockey Club's classic race at Randwick on Saturday. The rooms were beautifully arranged with masses of spring flowers,, and dancing was enjoyed. Mrs. Macindoe wore a frock of silver brocade. Amongst those who were present were: Mrs. A. E. A delightful evening was held at Nairn's reception rooms on Saturday, when Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Soares, of Parnell, gave aij evening in honour of the twenty-first birthday of their daughter Evelyn. The reception room was artistically decorated with streamers and balloons in shades of red, green, gold and blue. Bowls of arum lilies, palms and anemones were arranged round the room, while the supper room was effectively decorated in shades of mauve and pink. A large number of guests were present, and the evening was spent in dancing, games, competitions, and musical items. Splendid music was rendered by the Ambassadors Dance Club orchestra, under the baton of Mr. F. Holland, while items were given by Miss E. Markey, Misses E. and P. Cato and .B. Holland. To receive her guests Mrs. Soares wore a frock of wine marocain, and Miss E. Soares, white garget te and silver, with shawl. Among the guests were: Mrs. A. A twenty-first birthday party was given at the Tower Tea Rooms on Saturday forjjMiss Doreen Thomas. The decorations consisted of a fine cake, kewpies and multi-coloured ribbons. The side tables were decorated with gold Iceland poppies. Favours were distributed among the many well-dressed guests. Vocal items were excellently rendered by Mr. William Harris, Mr. O. Hintz. Gordon Johnson's orchestra supplied the latest dance music. Among those present were: Mrs. H. J.
