BUILDING IN CITY.
MILLION MARK PASSED. FIGURES FOR NTNE MONTHS. INCREASED NUMBER OF PERMITS. Building permits issued in the city of Auckland for the nine months' period ending September 30, are valued at £1,037,332 compared with £957.960 for the same period of last year, the increase being £79,372. The principal building for which a permit was issued during the past month was for a theatre at Surrey Crescent for Fuller-Hay ward pictures, the amount being £9323. At the direction of the managers of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Remuera, tentative plans have been prepared for submission to the congregation for a new church building which is estimated to cost £15.000, and an additional £1000 if a new pipe organ is provided for. It is proposed to have seating accommodation for 434 people. The proposed building is of the reinforced concrete pier and beam construction type.
The present St. Luke's Church is 63 years old, and has been on the present site for 53 years. The first minister, tlic late Rev. C. B. Munro, left £500 for a new church, which with accrued interest is available. Since then two further gifts or £500 have been made to the fund, and another £1000 has been promised as soon as the building is completed. It is proposed to go on with the work when £10,000 is available. Plans have been prepared by Mr. A. Sinclair O'Connor for a modern fivestoreyed building, to include shop and office premises, the site being on the Civic Square, nearly opposite St. James" Theatre. There is a frontage of 50ft to Queen Steret, with a depth of 70ft. The plans have been prepared for the firm of Tanfield, Potter and Co.. china merchants. The building, which is modern in type, is expectpd to be ready for occupation in about six months' time.
