"BUYING BRITISH."
Preference To Empire Goods
In State Contracts.
MB. AMERY GIVES FIGURES,
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 1 p.m.) LOXDOX, .September 28. Tire Conservative Party Conference at Yarmouth unanimously passed a resolution urging that all Government contracts should give preference to Home and Empire goods.
Mr. L. S. Amery (Secretary of State for the Dominions), on behalf of the Government, said they unreservedly accepted the motion, which the Imperial Conference had adopted, and had instructed all State Departments to give effective substantial preference to Home and Empire products. Apart from oil fuel, the Admiralty purchased 98A per cent of its requirements inside the Empire, and 98 per ceut of the meat supplies for the three Services was bought in the Empire, but unlimited preference was impossible, as the interests of the taxpayer and the general community must be watched.
Replying to a speaker who complained of the Post Office buying foreign bronze wire, Mr. Amerv said they were prepared to pay an amount substantially in excess of foreign tenders, but were not prejmred to pay the British "ring's" excessive price.
