AMENDMENTS TO THE BILL

WELLINGTON, Friday.

The sum of £.3700, instead of £6000, as originally proposed, shall be contributed annually by the Auckland city and suburban districts towards maintenance of tho Auckland War Memorial Museum, according to an amendment made by the Local Bills Committee to the Auckland War Memorial Museum Maintenance Bill. The committee has reduced the li>t of contributing local bodies by two, Pukekoho borough and Franklin county having been deleted from the schedule. Franklir include Mercer town district. Tho schedule of local bodie3 who shall contribute annually in proportion to population now includes Auckland City, the boroughs of Birkenhead, Devonport, Mount Albert. Mount Eden, Newmarkel, Northcote, Onehunga. Otahuhu and Takapuna, the road districts of Mount Roskill,.Mount Wellington, One Tree Hill and Panmure township, the town districts of Ellersic, Glen Eden. Henderson. Howick. Manurewa, New Lynn Papa kura, Papatoctoe and Helensville, the counties of Manukau ami Waitemata.

Two new clauses liavf been added to the bill, statim: that the Audit Office shall be the auditor of tho Museum controlling authority, and shall have powers in respect of moneys and accounts as if the board were a local authority within the meaning of section 1*24 of the Public Revenues Act. Accounts must be submitted to the Audit Oflfipe annually. There are no other amendments, and the Local Bills Committee, -which has heard evidence on the bill, recommends that it be allowed to proceed. Nothing 'was said when the bill was reported back to th* House this afternoon. but it is expected that if it gets into committee of the whole this session there will be a nrotracted fight, ; n order to have the oblloratorv provisions concerning contributions altered to a voluntary basis. A maioritv of the Auckland members have threatened to opnose the bill.
