SCOPE FOR UNEMPLOYED.
MORNINGSIDE TUNNEL. DEPARTMENT NOT READY TO START. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday.
"This is very necessary work, and would give plenty of employment," said Mr. F. N. Bartram (Grey Lynn) in the House of Representatives to-day, in asking the Minister of Railways whether, in view of the continued acute unemployment in Auckland, the Government would proceed immediately with the necessary tunnelling work in connection with the proposed Morningside duplication.
Mr. Bartram pointed out that it would be in the interests of the economic construction of the Auckland-Morningside and Morningside-New Lynn duplications to start the tunnelling work, owing to the fact that filling was required for the Auckland railway station.
This very necessary work, said Mr. Bartram, would, according to the Prime Minister's own statement of 1924, result in a saving in working expenses, which would almost pay full interest on the cost of construction.
Tho Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates replied that the necessary survey was not complete. Had it been finished, he could have given a much more concise answer.
'T can say, however, that instructions have been given to the Public Works Department to take on men—and they are taking on—men who want work," concluded the Prime Minister.
