RHODES SCHOLARS.
FEWER NOMINATIONS
AGE LIMIT RESPONSIBLE
Fewer candidates than usual are offer ing this year for the two Rhodes scholar ships allotted to the Dominion.
Victoria University College, is is announced, is sponsoring no candidates this year. Canterbury University College had five nominees for consideration by the Professorial Board, but one candidate has since withdrawn, nominations being left open for a little longer. The final consideration of Canterbury's nominees will be made on October 10. The delay in decision, it is stated, has been caused mainly by tlie fact that most of the candidates are too old. The trustees of the Rhodes Fund are now giving decided preference to youth, and 21 is considered to be the maximum age for a Rhodes scholar. Hence it mav be that Canterbury will be unable to find a suitably youthful candidate and, like Wellington, will forward no nominations. That wonld leave only four candidates in the final running, two from Auckland and two from Otago. The names of Auckland's candidates have yet to be announced. It is understood that five are offering. The two from Otago are Mr. F. M. Hunan, younger son of the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., and Air. YV. L. Henley. Both tliese candidates are 21 years of acre, the former studying law and the latter medicine.
Tt is stated that Khodes scholarships are not as keenly sought as they onee were. The age limit is one cause, and another is the limitations imposed by three years' residence at Oxford. A travelling scholarship is considered by many students to he of far more use.
