AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

THE NORTHERN UNION,

Members of the Northern Athletic Union held their annual meeting last evening. Mr. R. Coulter presided over a large attendance, representing every affiliated club in the Auckland district.

A successful season was reported In the annual report, it being stated that a majority of the clubs haa substantial credit balances with which to commence the new year. Athletic contests had been provided by 80 clubs, and the standard of competition had been high. A feature of the season's activities had been the increased popularity of cycling events. The year's workings showed a credit balance of £8 6/, while cash in hand totalled £100.

Considerable discussion took place as the result of a suggestion that competittors be insured against accident, it being finally decided tbat the incoming executive bte authorised to establish a benevolent fund. It was also decided tbat each competitor be asked ✓.> pay 1/ per competition day into the fund, tbe levy, however, to be optional.

It was decided to endorse the disqualification for life hy the Victorian Athletic Association of W. I'reston, a New Zealander. It was reported Preston had been one of the most successful sprinters in Australia, where he competed under a false name.

It was decided that Te Aroha be the headquarters of tbe anion, and that the next annual meeting be held at Auckland.

The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, Air. R. Coulter; vice presidents, Messrs. Mcßeth, Dawson ; audi tor, Mr. E. H. Edmonds; secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. L. Harris.
