ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES.
A QUIET MORNING
It was an off morning at Ellerslie this morning, and in consequence there was only a little fast work. No. 3 grass track was open, and the going was fair. Salamander and Optimistic ran half a mile in 555. They finished on terms.
Nancy Lee was sent over five furlongs and completed the task in 1.5 2-5. Freehold ran home from the half-mile post In 52 2-ss, moving very freely.
Pompeius was given strong work, running his last three furlongs in 39 3-ss. Laughing Prince and Metellus ran six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. The former was on the outside, and was going the better of the pair at the finish. Master Arch was worked over a round, running the last six furlongs in 1.25 3-5. He is well seasoned, and looks in good order.
I Violation, Archangel, and Motive were associated in a six-furlong spin. The first-named was soon in front, and covered the first three furlongs in 395, at which stage she was half a dozen lengths in front of the other two. She easily beat them home in 1-19 2-5.
Violation, who has not yet rtced, will have her first start in the Auckland Handicap to-morrow. Mint Leaf went a round, .which he covered it 1.45 3-5. Oration jqined in just after passing the six-furlong post, and there was little between them at the finish. The last six furlongs was run in 1.20 2-5. Over the Hurdles. First Prince (Fanning) was schooled over a couple of hurdles. He did not fence too well over the first, but jumped the second in good style. He afterwards worked over a round on the sand. The Two-year-old Parade. There will be a parade for. two-year-olds after the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie to-morrow.
FLICKER'S WIN.
BREAKS A RACE RECORD. ! When Flicker , won her first Sydney race at Kensington some months back, backers were not really impressed. Their opinion of the New Zealand three-year-old, however, must have undergone a drastic change after her brilliant win on the same course on September 19 (says a Sydney writer).
The value of the form, howerer contained in the fact that Flicker InT. j the race record credited to the distaStl® Precious Dust eight years ago. because Flicker had not raced fdc2amL time, some fielders were take risks with the youngster, hrt-k* 1 ® of public efforts did not mean condition. Frank McGrath had the filly plenty of solid work at &2P® wick, and she stripped a particularly fit horse. t % J Flicker had built up from her *— appearance, and the finishing effort tWi carried her to victory suggested she is an even better pony propoaitm than her New Zealand two year-3d fiw* • indicated. % The opinion that Flicker was tbo firi to carry weight was rapidly settled gave the leader and favourite, Golfe Dale, a long start over the flarii27 furlongs, and then finished all wnt field to win by a long head. The fact that at her two < Flicker has won only by has given rise to the idea that shaft not a real champion, but again pun ten have forgotten that she is only a receat three-year-old, and in opposition to oli* horses, to all but two of which she *ai giving weight, it was a good effort to win. r
