CO-OPERATIOX FOR REGULATION.

The proposed restrictions on poultrykeeping in Devonport were recently the subject of a conference between the local Borough Council in committee and representatives of the Devonport Poultrykeepers' Association, ifessrs. Cusworth. Staples and Harper . represented the fanciers, and expressed themselves as being willing to co-operate with the council in any reasonable way" for the control of poultry -keeping in the borough. They-pointed out hardships inseparable from the operation of the proposed new oy-law, which would limit the number of fowls on any section to twenty head. At this time of year, they averred, their pens were in full lay and new stock was being reared. . The council outlined the complaints from residents and the proposals of the Health Department, and explained that their proposed limitation of number was designed to remedy several very unpleasant nuisances in the borough, concerning which there were recurring complaints. ! , .It was eventually decided, in conferjuiity with the wishes of the deputation, land on the distinct understanding that the poultry-keepers will co.-operate with the council in regulating the local con-. ditions of the industry, that further action in connection with amendment to poultry'by-law be deferred till January 1, 1929; that poultry-keepers be advised that, ali poultry houses and runs must be brought up to the .standard required by the by-laws; and tha,t a systematic house-to-house inspection be made of all properties where poultry is. kept. ; The deputation further' agreerf that the annual license fee for poultry should be increased to 2/6 At last evening's meeting of the council, after full discussion, the recommendations of the committee were adopted.
