RACING NEWS.

THE AVONDALE MEETING.

WINNING JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS.

T. Metcalf was the most successful jockey at the Avondale meeting, winning four races (Bisox, Supremacy, Flying Prince and Arikitoa). A. E. Elis rode three winners (Arikitoa, Te Kara and Prodice) and J. Cammick (Hoariri, twice), R. McTavish (Grand Tea and High Pitch), B. Morris (Storm Fiend, a first and a dead-heat), J. Sharkey (Potoanui), H. Spinks (Billikine), E. Garrett (Llewellyn), H. Wiggins (Golden Krist) and H. Turvey (dead-heat on Maori Boy) were the best of the others. The winning trainers at the Avondale meeting were: F. Loomb (Arikitoa 2, Flying Prince, Prodice), H. Kama (Hoariri 2), F. McCabe (Storm Fiend, a win and a dead-heat), G. Henderson (Grand Tea), E. C. Rae (Potoanui), H. I. Spinks (Billiking), J. Brown (Bisox). J. Irwin (High Pitch), P. Conway (Llewellyn), T. Davidson (Maori Boy dead-heat), A. Cook (Te Kara) and H. Hastedt (Golden Krist). THE NEW ZEALAND CUP. BISOX REHANDICAPPED. (By Telegraph.—Press Associatlcn.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Bisox has been raised 51bs in the New Zealand Cup for her win in the Avondale Cup, making her weight 7.7. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Kingfield ran two good races at Avondalc, finishing third each day. He should soon get on the winning list. Mithra, after her Australian form, was expected to be hard to beat in the Avondale Guineas yesterday. She was prominent till the top was reached, but then fell back and was well beaten at the finish. Evidently she is not partial to the soft going. Ohinemuri was well supported for the Nihotupu Handicap at the Avondale meeting yesterday. She was one of the leaders along the back, but crossing the top dropped back suddenly to last, and was pulled up. It appears that she knuckled right over and was nearly down. Arikitoa is a good hack. He won a division of the Maiden Plate on Saturday, and yesterday annexed the New Lynn Handicap easily. He was always handy to Billikins till the straight was reached, and then went away to win comfortably. Arikitioa is one of F. Loomb's team. Storm Fiend has improved a great deal recently. He ran two very solid races at the Avondale meeting, winning on the first day and dead-heating with Maori Boy yesterday. The latter was unlucky, for if he had not run out very widely at the turn he would have annexed the chief part of the stake. Eaglet, a nice looking filly by Chief Ruler from that good mare *Dovclet made her first appearance under silk at Avondale yesterday when she was sent out to contest the Nursery Handicap. She was lying about fourth till the straight was reached, and finished very fast in third place, only threequarters of a length behind Imperial Guard, to whom she was conceding a good start when half the distance had been covered. Eaglet is owned by Mr. F. Earl and is trained by J. T. Jamieson. Te Kara had his first race this season in the Avondale Cup, and he put up a good performance in finishing third. Yesterday he was saddled up for the Plnmpton Handicap, and after bein«r well back in the early stages worked his way through to fourth position when the straight was reached. He then put in his claim, and galloping over everything won very comfortably at the finish" The old fellow is back to his best form, and he should be hard to dispose of in more important events later on. Hoariri had been galloping well prior to the Avondale meeting, and when it time on to rain and continued all dav on Saturday the conditions were ideal* for him. He won the Flying Stakes Handicap on the first day by three lengths, and yesterday annexed the President's Handicap cleverly. He was drawn on the outside of the field, and when the barrier went up lost some lengths. However, he was soon in a handy position behind Silvennine. The * latter looked as though he would win when they were half-way down the straight, but fifty yards from the post Hoariri was given his head, and he shot past Silvermine to win by a neck. Hoariri is in great fettle at present, and it takes a lot to stop him on a heavy track. NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. Owing to the recent heavy rain there was little work of importance at Ellerslie tins morning. The Xo. 3 grass track was open before breakfast, but was later closed on account of the heavy downpour during the breakfast interval. Segment was the only one to go fast on this track, running six furlonjrs in 1.23 1-5. Catkin did pace work on the sand. F. Tilley allotted Cashier, Freehold and Laughing Prince useful tasks on the same track. The most recent arrivals are: Waitaunaha, Huirangi Girl, and Master Arch. J. O'Xeill Is expected to arrive from Xcv Plymouth with Te Atiawa tomorrow.
