PARNELL ELECTORATE. UNITED PARTY'S CHOICE. The candidature of Mr. Harry R. Jenkins for the Parnell seat at the general elections in the interests of the United party has been announced. Mr. Jenkins was born in Taranaki and educated there. In 1916 he came to Auckland. He is the managing director of the Gane Milking Company, and is a practical farmer. Mr. Jenkins has taken a great interest in social reform, is a director of the Y.M.C.A., and a member of the Rotary Club. He is an enthusiastic golfer and tennis player, and was a vice-commodore of the Power Boat Association in 1926. WESTERN MAORI. MR. MAHUTA WITHDRAWS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HUXTLY, Monday. Mr. Tumate Mahuta, who had announced his intention of standing as an Independent for the Western Maori seat, against Sir Maui Pomare, has agreed to withdraw for a period of three years. MR. WILKINSON'S CAMPAIGN, OPPONENT OF HON. O. J. HAWKEN. (Bj Telegraph.—Press Aseociatioa.) HAWERA, this day. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, of Eltham, who is contesting the Egmont seat as au Independent against the Hon. 0. J. Hawken, opened his campaign last evening with an address at Auroa. Mr. Wilkinson, who represented Egmont from 1912 to 1919 as a Reformer, attacked the Government on the grounds of its high, inequitable taxation, lack of economy, excessive borrowing, interference in business, and its allowing of control of the Government by officials. On the licensing question he supported the bare majority with a two-issue ballot paper, and the extension of the time between polls to six jears. He reserved the right to associate himself with any party that might arise, and in his opinion appeared likely best to serve the common in\erest. CHRISTCRVRCH EAST. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRTSTCHURCH. Monday. Mr. R. M. Speirs, a well-known Christchurch land agent, has been asked by a number of prominent ■prohibitionists in the C'hristchurch East electorate to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate at the coining general election. Mr. Speirs stated that if he entered the contest it would be as an Independent candidate with leanines toward Labour. Mr. R. B. Speirs, the United Party candidate for* Auckland West, is a son of Mr. R. M. Speirs. Miss May Speirs, the champion woman tennis player of New Zealand is his daughter.
