ARREST OF DEALER.
ON FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE EXTRADITED TO SUVA* SAILING BY AORANGI. An order for the extradition of George Francis Shaw, dealer, to Fiji, on seven charges of false pretences, was made by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. There were seven charges of obtaining goods and money totalling £126 by means of valueless cheques, against accused, for whom Mr. Brodie (of Mr. R. A. Singer’s office) appeared. Ivo Lucchinelli, District Inspector of Constabulary, stationed at Suva, gave evidence and produced the original warrants, endorsed under the Fugitives Offenders Act, 1925. The inspector stated that when questioned, Shaw admitted that he was the person referred to in the warrants. Witness asked that Shaw be remanded to appear at the District Commissioner’s Court at Nadi, Fiji, and for that purpose he further requested that accused be delivered into his custody.
Detective-Sergeant T. Kelly said that Shaw was arrested at Hastings on provisional warrant on August 15, charging him with false pretences. He also admitted, to witness that he was the person mentioned in the warrant. The magistrate then ordered Shaw to be handed into the custody of Inspector Lucchinelli, to appear at Fiji. Shaw and his escort will leave for Suva by the Aorangi, sailing from Auckland tomorrow.
