TRENTHAM SCHOLARSHIPS.
485 CHILDREN ASSISTED. INCOME OF £3270 PER ANNUM. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, thia day. Ths executive committee of the Trentham Scholarship War Fund, in its eighth report, states that 287 applications have been received for bursaries, as compared• with 228 in the previous year. The following awards were made: — Renewals, 145 (£3125); new awards, 89 (£1900); declined, 53; total, 287 (£5025). Following is a classified statement of the awards made:—Class 1 (to children of deceased men), 170 (£3795); Class 2 (to children of partially or wholly disabled men), 61 (£1140); Class 3 (to children of men who served overseas), 3 (£9O). The average amount of each award was £2l 9/0. Since the awards have been made it has been found necessary for various reasons and mostly at the request of applicants to caneel 17 grants, totalling
The exceM of expenditure over income for the year amounted to £1539 4/10, and thie, after taking into account a contribution of £2OOO by the Canteen Board. The aoeeta of the fund amount to £28,935 5/5. Since the inception of the fund £27,275 15/ has been paid to bursars, representing 978 bureariea awarded and affecting 455 children. On the average each of the 455 has benefited to the extent of £59 18/. For the balance of the period the fund to designed to cover (twelve years), the amount in the hands of the Public Trustee will, at the present rate of interest, 5| per cent, provide £3270 per annum. It is too early yet to estimate the requirements for the coming year, but there to every indication that there will be no reduction in tho number of claims made.
