DISASTROUS FIRE.
OUTBREAK IN THEATRE Many Incinerated In Blazing Building. MADRID CATASTROPHE. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 2 p.m.) MADRID, September 23. Many were incinerated in a fire which broke out during a performance at the Nove D’Ates Theatre, in one of the most populous quarters of the city. The auditorium holds several hundreds and was packed when the fire started on the stage as the curtain was raised, and burst through over the stalls. Immediately panic broke out and the audience rushed to the exits. The theatre being old, the means of access could not deal with the crowd. The building was quickly gutted, as was also the whole of the street block.
On hearing of the affair, which can be reckoned as a catastrophe, the General Primo de Rivera, and the municipal authorities visited the blazing street. All the Madrid first-aid stations were filled with injured and every available motor car was requisitioned.
