“ATROCIOUS BEHAVIOUR.”
YOUNG MEN ON FERRY SHIP.
PASSENGER'S STRONG PROTEST.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
A serious complaint' concerning the behaviour of a number of young men who were apparently returning south after a sport’s fixture in the north, was made by a nae.sen.ger. who arrived from Wellington by the ferry steamer Maori yesterday morning.
He said he did not know definitely that they were footballers, though he believed that they were. Their conduct, he said, wae atrocious, and their language filthy and obscene. They practically took possession of the ship, rushing up and down the corridors and disturbing and disgusting other passengers by their outrageous behaviour. “I am a frequent traveller on the ferry,” he said, “and I don’t want another experience like it. Why this hooliganism should be permitted by the Unon Company on their ships I don’t know, but no effective steps were taken to stop it. Personally, I remonstrated with them, and threatened to complain to the captain and the chief steward, but the only reward I got was filthy abuse from soealled ‘sports,’ We had five hours of it, and it was resumed at daylight. Conduct of this sort is not my idea of sportsmanship, and I hope that measures will be taken to compel better behaviour by travelling teams.”
