THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

AUSTRALIAN BUTTER. From the first of this month the export bounty on butter in Australia under the Paterson stabilisation plan waa increased to 4d per lb. but the levy remains unchanged at 1144 per lb on all butter made in Australia. The effect, of coiune. is that consiunei-s are forced to pay 4d more for tlieir 'butter in order to assist the export trade. Their only chance of relief, namely, supplies from New Zealand has been removed with the imposition of a dutv of «d per lb on butter imported from this country. HERD TESTING. Besults of the Bay of Plenty Herd Testing Association for the month, ending July 30. gave averages from al! groups as follow: — 1115 cows, 3861 b milk, 4.7 teat, 18.28 fat. For the period ending September 3, the return's were:—s922 cows, 6031 b milk, 4.4. test, 26.46 fat. BRITAIN'S HEAVY BUYING. Import* of dairy produce into Great Britain during August were very heavy. Figures aupplied by the board are aa follow:— August Butter Cheese cwt cwt 1926 464,703 302,961 1927 465,098 289.630 1928 585.-142 328,872 Under the circumstances it ie remarkable that the market held up a« well as it did during the laet few months, prices being substantially higher than at the same time last year. Denmark’s butter contribution was much heavier, actually 43,000 cwt than in August, 1927, which will account for the relatively lower price ruling in August for Danish, TAUMARUNUI.
