TRADE WITH U.S.A.
DEMAND FOR OUR PRODUCTS.
That New Zealand's meat trade with the United States is being built up to endure is the decided opinion of the American Trade Commissioner (Mr. Julian B. Foster). “New Zealand beef,” he stated to a “Dominion” reporter, “is very popular in the States on account of its delicacy. The exclusion of supplies of meat from South America on account of foot-and-mouth disease has given New Zealand her opportunity, and the New’ Zealand Meat Board is making the most of its chance.”
California, Mr. Foster explained, was increasing its market in New Zealand for dried fruits, which W’ere giving satisfaction as to quality, price, packing, and delivery. Heavy sales had been reported this season, and importers appeared to prefer them to dried fruits from other countries.
The Commissioner went on to explain that he had had inquiries from the United Slates for such New Zealand products as eel skins, shark skins, pigs’ hair and bristles, ox, cow- aud calf skins, sheeps’ pelts, rabbit skins, red deer skins, sausage casings, and other products of the freezing industry. “There are markets for all these,” he said, “but the difficulty with some of them is to get them in quantities sufficient to do business on. I refer especially to eel and shark skins, which are in demand for fancy leathers. 'The pig hair is wanted in large quantities and at good prices for quality. But those wishing to do business must furnish really good samples aud quote prices and make definite business offers. I get samples sent in and can put sellers in touch with buyers, but what is wanted at this end in every case is a definite business proposition and a guarantee of supply. I am not here to represent or help any one trade between New Zealand and America, but to help all. to attend to all interests to the limits of the capacity of this office.”
