ROTORUA NOTES.
Mrs. J. H. Herrold and Mrs. S. H. Hay gave a delightful birthday dance on Monday evening at St. John’s Hall, which had been artistically decorated with streamers in shades of mauve, lilac, orange and gold, coloured balloons and Japanese lanterns, while vases of violets decorated the small supper tables arranged round the sides of the hall, and also in the centre table, where Mrs. Hay and Mrs. Herrold cut two beautiful birthday cakes. Mr* F. W. Wilkie, on behalf of the guests, wished Mrs. Herrold and Mrs. Hay many happy returns of the day, the beat of luck and happiness. Excellent dance music was supplied by the Dixieland Orchestra. Fancy paper caps and several novelty dances added to the evening’s amusement. The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs. W. Sumner and Mr. C. Hitchcock. Bridge tables were arranged on the stage for those who did not dance, The prize-winners were Mrs. W. Hill and Mr. A. G. Holland. Mrs. Hay wore a charming frock of delphinium blue georgette; Mrs. Herrold wore a charming frock of beaded coral georgette. Those present were: Dr. and Mrs. S. H. Hay, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Carr. The St. Luke’s 23rd annual daffodil show was held at the Parish Hall, Rotorua, on Wednesday, and was officially opened by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. N. McLean, who was accompanied by Mrs. McLean. On their arrival, Mrs. McLean was presented by Mrs. F. W. Chatterton with a lovely bouquet of golden daffodils, and Mr. McLean with a buttonhole, by Miss J. Carter. Mr. McLean congratulated the committee on the splendid success of the show, which had been inaugurated by Archdeacon C. Tisdall twenty-three years ago. A stall for the sale of cut flowers was superintended by Mesdames Giesen and Hesketh; tea rooms, Mesdames Pakes and D. Steele; sweets, Misses P. St. Clair and Joyce Carter. In the evening an entertainment was given, with items by Miss S. Maxwell, fancy dances; Miss T. Giesen, vocal solos; Misses K. Hall and T. Giesen, vocal duets; Misses M. Cooney, S. Maxwell, P. Martin, R. Steele, vocal quartet; Miss R. Steele, vocal solo. Miss M. McKenzie played the accompaniments. Mr. Hesketh, in judging the daffodils, specially congratulated the novices on their splendid display, and made the following awards:—Eighteen varieties, Miss E. Robinson 1; 12 varieties, Mr. J. Halkett 1, Mrs. C. A. Clarke 2, Mrs. A. G. Holland h.c.; 6 varieties, Mr. J. Halkett 1, Mrs. Clinkard 2; 3 varieties, Mr. J. Halkett 1, Mrs. Chatterton 2; trumpets, Mr. J. Halkett 1, Mrs. C. A.
