Big Field.

Opening Event Run In Divisions. The Avondale Jockey Club opened their spring meeting to-day on the suburban course in boisterous weather. There was a moderate attendance and the going was inclined to be heavy. The opening event, the Maiden Plate, comprised a very big field, which necessitated that race being run in divisions. When betting ceased Eager Rose, Jolly Money and Blue Spear were backed in that order, with Arikitoa also well supported. First Division. When the field settled down the leaders were Fernden, Jolly Money, Armenia, Amos, Section, Grand Tea and Eager Hose. They raced along the back in that order. Turning into the straight Fernden was still in the van, followed by Jolly Money, Armenia, Eager Rose, Sulla and Grand Tea. Grand Tea then came through and won by half a length from Komak, who beat Lunette by three-quarters of a length. Sulla was fourth, and then came Nurjuhan, Fernden, Eager Rose, and Jolly Money. Second Division. Upoko was soon in front from Arikitoa, Parfait Amour and Letrim. As the field crossed the top the order was Upoko, Parfait Amour. Leitrim, Blue Spear, Diamond Queen and Kingsland. Upoko was first to turn for home, when Arikitoa came through and won by a neck from Parfait Amour, with Upoko, who tired over the final stages, third, two lengths away. Blue Spear was fourth, followed by Diamond Queen, Maori Boy and Kingsland. The Favourite Wins Hurdles. Potoanui (£1813), Polyphemus ( £881) and Quincoma ( £493) were best backed in the Kingsland Hurdles. When they were let go Fair Abbey, Siaosi and Pekatahi were the early leaders, and showed the way over the first fence, where Marble Mount and Polyphemus fell, and Fair Abbey also came to grief at the next hurdle. Quincoma had charge passing the stand, attended by Siaosi, Potoanui, Hangawera and Blago. As they raced along the back there was little change, except that Siaosi had replaced Quincoma in the lead. Siaosi was first into the straight from Quincoma, Potoa- , nui and Hangawera. In the run to the 1 judge Potoanui finished on best, and beat i Siaosi by two and a-half lengths, with ; Hangawera four lengths away in third place. The next to finish was Llewellyn, Quincoma, Pekatahi and Marita. Billikins Wins All The Way. Whaka King, Te Atiawa, Subdivision and Winnington were withdrawn from the Members' Handicap, leaving a dozen runners to contest the six-furlong event. The public selected Billikins as the likely winner, and she carried £1076, the next in demand being Gold Money (£882) and Lucy Rose (£817). The race was run in teeming rain, and it was hard to pick up the horses, but Billikins was soon in front, with Serang and Ballymoy 11. following. They ran along the back in that order, but the field was well bunched across the top, with Billikins still in the lead, and she went on to win by threelengths from Liaison, who was a neck in front of Master Doon, the next to finish being Ballymoy 11., Sereng, Lucy Rose, Gold Money and Tea Lady. The Cup. The Hawk, Queen Arch, Paitonu and Vivo were the defections from the Avondale Cup, the principal event of the programme. It was a good betting race with Nukumai £801, King Lu £654, and Beau Cavalier £607, most in demand. Beau Cavalier, King Lu and King Emerald were soon in front, but past the stand the order was King Emerald, Royal Mint, Beau Cavalier, Bisox, King Lu, Sir Archie and Te Kara, with Ixukumai and Star Stranger last. Along the back Royal Mint and King Emerald were racing together just in front of Beau Cavalier, Bisox, Sir Archie, King Lu and Mask, with Star Stranger about a dozen lengths away last. King Lu and Royal Mint were ©till in front crossing the top and then came Bisox, Beau Cavalier, Te Kara and Valkon. Royal Mint was first into the straight, followed by Bisox, Valkon, Te Kara and King Emerald, but Bisox stayed on best and beat Royal Mint bv a length and a-half, with Te Kara half a length away in third place. Valkon was fourth, with Nukumai, Mask, Desert Glow, Sir Archie, King Lu, Beau Cavalier, King Emerald and Star Stranger following. Results:— MAIDEN PLATE of 270sovs. Seven furlongs. First Division. Limerick and Roscrea are also going to Melbourne, the former having been nominated for the Caulfield Stakes and the latter for the Herbert Power Stakes. RANDWICK DIVIDENDS. DISTRIBUTION REVISED. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Owing to the gradual diminution of the volume of totalisator investments on the Randwick course throughout the year, the State Cabinet has authorised the Australian Jockey Club to revert to the former basis of distribution of dividends, namely, 60 per cent for winners and 20 per cent each for the second and third horses. The present distribution is 50, 30 and 20 per cent.
