The Labour Department proceeded against -lamee Stewart, of Helensville, in the Magistrate's Court, at Helensville yesterday before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., on two " charges under the t Shops and Offices Act and the Factory Act of failing to pay wages weekly or fortnightly. Mr. J. Hollows conducted the case for the Department and Mr. Dodds for the defendant. After hearing the evidence, Mr. Dodds asked leave to withdraw from the case. This was granted. The inspector stated that on examining the wages book on August 15 he had found that a butcher employed by the defendant had not been pa'd for five or six weeks and that a baker had not been paid for nine weeks. The defendant had since called upon the butcher to pay £40 for meat, which he had had during the past four years,- and the baker £42 for bread which he had had. It had been well known to the defendant that the men had been taking home the meat and the bread. Counsel stated that hie instructions were that all wages had been paid in cash. After evidence 'had been called the magistrate eaid that there had been deliberate breaches of the Acts. He imposed a penalty of £0 and costs in the case of the butcher and £2 and costs in the case of the baker.
