MOTOR CONTROL.
LOCAL SPEED LIMITS.
REGULATIONS AMENDED,
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Some of the most criticised points iii the motor vehicles regulations have been revised ill supplementary regulations issued to-night and operative on October 1. The former regulation, "That no hand shall be removed from the steering wheel when a vehicle is in motion (though another regulation requires the turning signal to be given with outstreched arm) is now recognised as impossible." The new rule is "That not more than one hand be removed from the steering control." Rear reflector requirements are revised to provide "That the reflector shall be set perpendicularly as near as possible to, or forming part of the tail light. Its reflecting surface is to be uot less than two inches." The local speed limits regulation is subject to an important change. A new clause directs "That any controlling authority which lias fixed whether, before or after coming into force of these regulations, which may hereafter fix any limit for motor vehicles under any statutory power conferred upon such controlling authority independent of these regulations, shall forthwith erect on every road, or portion of a road, to which such speed limit relates, and at all times while such speed limit is in force, shall maintain thereon the traffic signs of class D required pursuant to regulation 1(1, and shall forthwith send to the Minister a sketch plan, or map of the road or locality, showing the position of the traffic signs erected, and from time to time a sketch plan or map showing any alteration made in the position of traffic signs. And the provisions of clause 6 of regulation 15 shall apply in the case of any by-la,w or enactment whereby such speed limit is fixed."
Lighthouse traffic signs are to be permitted on the authority of the Minister of Public Works, the approved symbol for railway crossing being the letters R.R.
