SEA PASSENGERS' RIGHTS.
STATE ACTION SUGGESTED.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON - , this day.
According to Mr. Savage (Auckland West):, when a traveller takes out a ticket; to travel by sea lie receives a printed document, which he probably does not read, but which purports to relieve the shipping company of all liability in respect to accident, except tbat occurring as the .result of the negligence of the company's servants. A Wellington barrister, Mr- P. J. CKRegan, added Mr. Savage, is entitled to credit for taking up, on behalf of the public, this unfair contract. He had petitioned the Government asking for legislation' in connection with the rights of passengers against ship owners and other transport proprietors in respect of injuries by accident resulting from the negligence of shipowner or other defendants. The Public Petitions Committee has reported to the House in connection with this petition, referring the matter to the Government for consideration, with a view to concerted action being taken by the Imperial Government.
