INTIMIDATION CHARGE.
MINERS AND TRIBUTE PARTY. WOMEN AMONG DEFENDANTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WESTPORT, Wednesday. As a sequel to the demonstration made on August 6 against the Cascade cooperative workers, whom the miners term a tribute party, 33 informations were laid by the police against certain residents of Denniston and Burnett's Face. The charges included 25 of intimidation and besetting,' one of hindering a constable in the execution of his duty and seven of using insulting language. Among the defendants on the last charge were some women. The charges were heard to-day before Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M. The defence was that the demonstration was intended as a peaceful protest against a system* of working which the miners' unions regarded as being inimical to their principles and that the sequel was that an amicable arrangement was made between the Denniston Miners' Union and the Cascade Company. The use of insulting language was denied. The magistrate reserved judgment.
