TARANAKI TOURISTS. GOOD WIN AT TE AROHA. THAMES VALLEY OUTCLASSED. TE AROHA, this day. Beaten at Auckland by Auckland on Saturday by a margin o£ nearly fifty points, the Thames Valley representatives again went down with a big ecore against them yesterday, when the Taranaki touring team registered a 35-point victory, the -final score being: Taranaki, 38; Thames Valley, 3. The home forwards, assisted by a strong wind, dominated the game in the first spell, and limited the visitors' score to eight points, but in the second epell, Taranaki, with Johnston and Brown, both ex-New Zealand representatives, as the star players, had no difficulty in adding an extra 30 points. Taranaki kicked off against the wind, and after the opening exchanges. Masters, Courtney and Walters opened up a strong attack, causing Taranaki to force. Thames Valley returned to th« attack, but a fast breakaway by Johnson and Robinson changed the position. Cater, Brown and Watson took a passing bout to the line, where Goldshury saved well. Frost tackled the Taranaki full-back In possession, and Goldsbury lost a try for Thames Valley through a forward pass on the Taranaki line. Taranaki's first scoreing movement was originated by Riley. The ball went out to Brown, who cut-in and scored between the posts. Ike kicked an easy goal. Goldsbury retired injured, and was replaced by Reid. The Thames Valley forwards, led by Walters, were bustling the visitors badly, and twice nearly scored after good work by Dillimore and Frost. However, the Taranaki backs were always dangerous. Ike broke through and passed to Brown, who ran strongly before sending Watson on to score a fine try in the corner. Ike's kick struck the post. Taranaki 8, Thames Valley 0. The Taranaki backs showed promise whenever they got the ball, but were frequently checked by the rushing Thames Valley forwards, who were much superior to the visiting pack in the loose. IMay was in midfield when Masters dashed through brilliantly aDd passed to Dillimore, who passed to Walters, who scored wide out. Lockett's kick was short. Taranaki 8, Thames Valley 3, Soon after resumption the home backs tried some passing, but McQuarters lost the ball on the line. Watson set off for the line with a fast burst of speed from halfway, and short-punted past the Thames Valley full-back. Brown, following fast, caught the ball on the bounce and scored wide out. Ike's kick was wide. From a scramble 20yd« out Brown cut-in beautifully, but fell a yard from the line. A scrum was formed, and Riley shot the ball to Carter and Crawford, who scored well out with a determined run. Collins failed with the kick. Taranaki 14, Thames Valley 3. Brown missed in a good attempt to pot a goal. Taranaki, aided by the wind, continued to hold the upper hand. . Crawford beat McQuarters and Thornton badly, to score between the posts, and Collins converted. The visitors' next try was scored by A. Guy, who picked up in the ruck and ran round between the posts. S nod grass charged down Collins' kick. Hume opened up a likely-looking movement for the local team, but Carter and Riley soon reversed the position. Collins fielded the ball in a good position, and smart handling by the visiting backs gave Watson a try In the corner. It was now only a matter of how many tries Taranaki could score before time was called. All the back line participated in a passing rush, and Watson scored again. Collins converted. Soon after, Robinson shot across from a scramble on the line, Collins again converting. Taranaki 35, Thames Valley 3. The last try of the day was due to Johnwn, who raced through in midfield, and gave Brown another easy try. INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. In a hard and interesting game to-day at Rugby Park, Wellington beat Southland by 19 points to 15. The game was very strenuous, though not rough, and a surprising number of Injuries were received, the most serious case being that of F. J. Coman, a visiting five-eighth, who was removed to hospital suffering from slight concussion. The packs were evenly matched, and a great struggle was witnessed. The pace of the Wellington backs won the day for them. Their tackling was very sound. Porter, the Wellington captain, was the outstanding player on the field. PUKEKOHE V. AUCKLAND JUNIORS. High School, as curtain raiser, on No. 2 ground at 2.30 p.m. In a discussion on benefit matches it was decided to donate the proceeds of the knock-out competition to Mr. H. Robinson. Mr. Tama reminded the committee that at the annuaL meeting it was decided to have a benefit match for the late secretary's wife, and on the chairman's suggestion it was decided to hand over the proceeds of the annual social to Mr. Hodson.
