DISTRESS IN AUCKLAND.
UNEMPLOYMENT CHIEF CAUSE
HOSPITAL BOARD'S BURDEN.
The Relief Committee's report, presented to the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday, disclosed an increase in-thei cost of outdoor relief, which, the chairman, Mr. Wm. Wallace, stated was due to unemployment. According to the report the new cases considered totalled ■129 in August, as against 273. in July and 140 in June. A total of 314 cases were revised in August, 132 in July, and 297 in June. The report shows that of the aggregate of 443 cases, unemployment was the cause of 209 in August. The unemployment figures were 212 in July, and 221 in June.
The 'statement of accounts attached to the report e Lowed that the cost of relief in August was £4*275, as against* £3265 in July and £3043 in June, a circumstance which caused the chairman to remark that unemployment was responsible for the great portion of last month's increase.
