INCREASE OF SHEEP.
"It is gratifying to note the steady increase in the number of sheep ill the Dominion since the slump period;" said ilr. H. D. Acland when moving the annual report of the New Zealand Sheepownera, and Farmers' Federation. "Our interim sheep returns for this year show the number of sheep as slightly over 27.000,000, thia probably constituting a record number for the Dominion. Cause for further gratification is the marked increase in the number of breeding ewes, indicating a furthej- probp, ble increase in lamb production next season. The lambing return* this year show that 13,179,445 lambs were tailed last season. Possibly this increase is due to a certain extent to the increased use of phosphate for topdressing purposes on our pastures, but I think another cause is the increasing overhead expense attached to agricultural farming resulting in less cereal growing, with a corresponding increase in grazing and fattening of etock, which under present conditions possibly is more profitable than the growing of white crops.
