SOUTH ISLAND TRADE.
BETTER SHIP SERVICE. REQUEST FOR A SUBSIDY. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. A conference was held to-night between the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce and representatives of harbour boards, of commerce, and other bodies to consider the question of shipping facilities between the South Island and Victoria and Tasmania. There were 25 delegates present, including representatives from Lyttelton and Christchurch. The following motions were carried: — (1) That the Government be asked to approach the Union Company, or eome other company, to ask for a regular and more frequent service from Melbourne, Hobart, Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington and return; (2) that the Government be urged to grant such subsidy as may be necessary for the establishment of that service; (3) that the Government place the views of the conference fully before the Fede/al Government of Australia, the Government of Victoria, and the Government of Tasmania, with a request that aach of these Governments assists by also granting subsidies; (4) that the Government urge upon the Federal Government of Australia the necessity of exempting from the Australian Navigation Act passenger steamers carrying cargo calling at Tasmania en route to and from New Zealand.
The resolutions will be laid before the Government during the annual conference of chambers of commerce in "Wellington next month.
