THE LICENSING BILL
AT CRITICAL STAGE, i . IK COMMITTEE TO-NIGHT. SHEAF OF AMENDMENTS. ' ~j NO CHANCE OF AGREEMENT.*' (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this da jw The Prime Minister will ask the House of Representatives to-day to take the Licensing Bill in committee, and to complete consideration, including the third reading, before the sitting ends. The opinion of most Parliamentarians is that last session's history will repeat itself, except for minor variations. Every effort to secure some compromise has failed to make substantial changes in members , alignment. The rock on which the bill will be wrecked is the amount of tho majority necessary to make any licensing change. While there may be a variation of two or three votes in the Legislative Council in favour of the 52£ per cent majority, providing, the term is six years, it will be insufficient to prevent the measure passing in shape acceptable to the Prime Minister. There will be a large sheaf of amend' ments in the committee stage to-night, and. the sitting is expected to last till afer daylight.
