HUNTLY NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) HUNTLY, Friday. Last Monday night the Volunteer Hall was filled by a large number of the public that had assembled for the purpose of saying good-bye to Mr. R, G. Rainger who, after a residence of six years in Huntly, had severed his connection with the coal-mining township in which, as the large gathering, proved ho had made hosts of friends. The valedictory took the form of a smoke concert. Mr. J. P. Bailey. J. P., presiding. With song, toast and recitation a very enjbya-ble evening was speut, the toast of the evening being drunk with musical honours. The chairman, in the course of hisj-emarfcs, emphasised the many good qu:fflties of .Mr. Rainger, who. as a singer of ability and as an ardent sportsman, had helped at almost every concert, and had done his best to promote the interests of healthy sport. On behalf of the residents he presented Mr. Rainger with a handsome gold albert as a token of the esteem in which he was held, and as a memento of his stay in Huntly Mr aßinger replied in a felicitous speech. A very Peasant function took place tn the Pukemiro School last week, when, on behalf of the settlers of that district, the Rev w W. Avery presented Miss West with a handsome silver tea service as a slight reccml tion of the trouble which, during her stay in the district, she had taken to promote the social welfare of the community, and as a token of their good wishes for her ruture ■welfare h games and songs a very pleasant evening was spent. ■ p nrdie. Inspector of Schools, has, during the week been paying his annual visit to Kimilua, Ohmewai, Huntly. and Pukemiro schools. It is stated that" the result of his examination reflects the highest credit on teachers and pupils. Though severalard ent fishermen began the season with daybreak on Frldya morning, no kills so far have been reported
