TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH.
(By Teregraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHUKCH, Friday. After doing a gallop at Kicearton this morning, Buccleuch showed signs or lameness, and as they developed on his cooling down, it was decided to scratch him from all engagements at the C.J.C. meeting. Some time ago the Benzoin horse showed signs of lameness in the shoulder, and there was always a doubt as to whether he would come through the searching preparations. Martelle is also under a cloud, and has not been worked for several mornings. The Derby on Monday promises to be one of the most interesting in the history of Canterbury's blue riband. Unfortunately two prominent horses in Glencnlloch and JtJonnle Glen having been causingtheir trainers anxiety, but botu are certain starters. Gold Crest also has been showing slight signs of soreness, but this has not affected his worn, wliich has been of a particularly higb order.
If Dawn suceeds in the Maiden Plate, he is sure to have a big following; for the Derby, but though he is a most resolute galloper, he has no credentials as a stayer. Counte Witte comes under the same category, and I know his trainer almost despairs of him seeing out a strongly ran race.
Should Elevation win the Cup, his chance of attaining the. Derby Handicap will be enhanced, but he hardly fills the eye as a Derby colt. Nothing has done such satisfactory work en the track as Bonnie Glen, amongst his achievements being a mile ana half gallop under light weight in 2.3S and a mile and a quarter in 2.9. In tlie early part of this week he had to be eased up, but that will do him no harm. I fancy he or Gold Crest will be returned as winner of the first Dominion blue ribbon.
Intelligence and Mystification have been scratched for aJI engagements at the CJ.C. meeting, both having, gone amiss.
