WAIHI HOSPITAL.

ARRIVED AX

(By. Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WAIHI. this day.

Waihi Hospital affairs were responsible for a specially summoned meeting this morning, all the trustees being present. The chairman announced that he received Dr. Claridge's resignation last night, and that Dr. Robertson had been installed as medical superintendent.

.Mr Foster having objected to the meeting as being informal. Dr. Valentine, Inspector-General of Hospitals. Hrho was present, stated that the, meeting was called at his suggestion, and he took all responsibility as to informality.

-The'resignation of the medical superintendent was read, and a short discusEion followed.

Dr..Valentine stated that he had gone most exhaustively into affairs generally at the hospital, and his report would b? submitted.to the Government. In th& meantime, though it was not usual to hold a brief for any doctor, he would like to emphasise the wisdom of J?r. ■Robertson's appointment. Dr. Eoberi;son'was a_member_of the Royal College of Surgeons, and the work he had done entitled him to be regarded as one of tue-forembst men- an :his profession in the colony, and Waihi should feel proud if possessing such-a man to take charge of its hospital. He had all the qualifications- necessary for making a firstclass; superintendent. : He believed that by giving. Dr. Roc-ertson a free hand, iWaihi in twelve months would be proud ofits, hospital, and proud of its surgeon. He denied authoritatively certain. statements made in the local Press as to the intentions of the Government in the matter. He (Dr. Valentine) considered that by giving, the Medical Superintendent sole charge at the Hospital, with lie power to call in other doctors, they trb'uld secure the best system for Waihi. He hoped'the trustees would give the system a good trial.

The resolution accepting Dr. Claridge's resignation was accepted, on the motion of the chairman, who stated that Dr. Robertson had been installed. It tois quite possible, however, that at the next meeting a further discussion -would ensue as to the advisability of appointing a resident surgeon. Dr. Claridge Tfas to receive three months' salary in heu,of completing the term of his engagement. The matron, it was stated, only had to receive a month's notice, and advertisements had already been inserted in the Auckland papers. Dr. Valentine was warmly thanked lor the great pains he had taken in investigating the matter.
