HOCKEY.
The championship matches under the auspices of the Auckland. Hockey Association were resumed after a spell of slx wee_s. Owing to the heavy rains during the week the ground was of a very soft nature, and was not conducive to good nocsey. in tbe senior grade Auckland A neat bt. George's by 5 goals to 2, United defeated Ponsonby by 6 to nil, and University accounted for Auckland B by 5 to 2. In the ladies' competition Moana defeated Ladies' College by 1 goal to nIL
AUCKLAND A V. ST. GEORGE.
On No. 2 ground, Remuera, with both under full strength. Auckland were first away, and gained the oarsmen's territory. Play was shifted to the opposite end, until the city forwards broke away, and gaining the circle, Brooke-Smith scoredAuckland, 1; St, George's, 0. Aucklaud kept up the pressure, and Jessup, picking the ball up on his stick, juggled into the circle and found the net: Auckland, 2; St George's, 0. St George's made a temporary invasion into their opponents' circle, out the effort was fruitless. The red and blacks continued the attack, which resulted in Brooke-Smith netting: Auckland 3; St. George's, 0. Give-and-take play followed.
St. George's opened proceedings In the second half, and from an onslaught by their vanguard Tattley dashed through the opposing backs and scored; Auckland, 3; St. George's, 1. Play now travelled up and down the fleald, and Mather breaking away from his own 25, notched again: Auckland, 4; St. George's, 1. Just aftc. from a scrambling rush, Palmer found the net: Auckland. 4: St. George's, 2. St. George's now took up the running, and. taking the ball from their own 25 to the circle, just missed. Shortly before time was called Brooke-Smith scored again: Auckland, 5; St. George's. 2. Mr E. Campbell Madden made an efficient referee. EPSOM (3) V. ELLERSLIE (nil). A friendly match was played between the Epsom Club (winners of the second junior championship) and Ellerslie Club (first junior! on the Ellerslie ground. In the first half McCowan succeeded iv scoring the first goal for Epsom, after several shots, which were well stopped by the goalkeeper. In the second half Epsom succeeded in getting the bully-off. but was beaten by EUerslie's left wing-forward, who carried the bal! down the field, and whose shot at goal was well stopped by Epsom's goalkeeper. Epsom then carried the ball down 'into the Ellerslie circle, and Becroft succeeded In scoring after some clever play. Epsom pressed hard again, and McCowan succeeded In scoring the third goal for Epsom. After the match the ladles kindly supplied afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. UNITED V. PONSONBY. United defeated Tonsonby by 7 goals to nil. after a fast and interesting game. Ponsonby played two men short, but they were greatly strengthened in the rearguard by the inclusion of Cropp, an old Canterbury player, who played a fine game at full-back. The first spell ended in favour of United by 4 goals to nil. Porter (1), Barry (2), and Munro (1) scoring. In the second half Porter. Barry, and Munro were again successful in finding the net. Mr Larkin_ refereed. UNIVERSITY V. AUCKLAND B. The students, after 20 minutes of even play, pulled themselves together, and notched four goals in quick succession Rands getting two, and Jacobsen and' Brookfield one each. Auckland then rallied, and from good combined play Whyman beat the University goalkeeper. In the second spell play was of a give-and-take nature, each side scoring a goal.
