CITY COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Auckland City Council was held last evening. His. Worship the Mayor (Mr A. M. Myers) presided, and there were also present: Messrs A. J. Entrican, L. J. Bagnall, H. M. Smeeton, R. Tudehope, K. Farrell, W. C. Somers, W. E. Hutchison, Geo. Knight C. Grey, P. M. MacKay, A. E. Glover. Waterworks.—The Under-Secretary for Lauds wrote stating that two sections of laud in the parish of Waitakerei had been vested In tie City Council for waterworks purposes, and that such grant had i>een duly gazetted.—The letter was received Knee-deep in Mud.— J. Schisclika wrote asking for a crossing, across the end of Fort-street. He complained that users of the road had to wade knee-deep in mud —The city engineer reported that a crossing was to be constructed from the juuetir.u of Fort and Custom streets to Gunson's corner.-Mr Smeeton thought that this would hardly, meet the difficulty, and the matter was referred to the engineer to report.
Swauson Tramway.—Reporting on the proposal of T. Billington. proposing to lay down a tramway at Swauson in connection with liis contract for Waitakerei reservoir, and suggesting that the Council provide rails and sleepers and retain the tramway permanently. Engineer in charge. Wnitakerei waterworks, estimating the length of the tramway at 2J miles and cost £1742. and stating a tramway would have lo bp laid on portion o£ the road metalled, and that he would like to see the Council share with Mr Billington iv the construction of a tramway — A. Christian, objecting to v tramline heinlaid nn the roml at Swans™.- Engineer in charge. Y\ aitaknrei waterworks estimated tUr cost of a temporary tram at £140(1 and the extra required for a permanent lino at £342.-Reply that as the tramway will apparently not be very much required after completion of tbe waterworks, the f onncil is unable to accede to the surges-
Kerbing and Channelling.—Reporting m a petition for kerbing and channelling in Burgoyue-street. tie rlty engineer stated that to complete the formation of Arneystreet a retaining wall was required, at a cost of £120. which woulfl largely benefit private property, and that the total cost of the works required to complete the road would be £400.—The Streets Committee recommended that In view of the fact that the Council had authorised the expenditure of £200 In kerbing nncl channelling in Aγ-ney-street. it could not recommend the carrying out of the further works asked Albert-street.—Reporting on a petition for repairs to roadway off Albert street by SmithSf-Bond, the city engineer recommended that the kerbing on north side of roadway be left as a£ present: that the opposite side be kerbed to give a minimum width of 13 feet between the kerbs: that the portion running north of Swansonmjnimum width of 13 feet between kerbs: that both sides of street be channeled with one row of Bin pitchers, the road excavated and a rubble foundation put Id and finished with bluestone macadam rolled: and that a small width of the pathway be concreted and other parts made up with waste. Cost £320.—1t was decided that the work recommended be done. !
Shipbuilding.— Mr W. H. Brown wrote asking permission to use the portion of NPlson-stveet abutting on the harbour for the purpose of building a vessel.—The matter was referred to the Streets Committee with power to act.
Crossing.—ln reply to the application of the Grey Lynn Borough Council for the formation of a crossing over Ponsonhyrond. connecting Williamson-avenue with Hepbnrn-street, the Streets Committee recommended that the application be granted conditionally on the cost. £49 19/. being borne by the Tramway Company (£l4 16/) the Grey Lynn borough (£l7 11/6), and the City (£l7 11/6).
Picton-street. —The city pngineer was instructed to report with estimate of cost upon the completion nf kerbing and channelling in Picton-street between Paget and Hepburn streets.
Abattoirs The city engineer, reporting re electric lighting at Abattoir, states that thp specification to be submitted will provide for a multitubular boiler with a benting surface of 760 square feet; that the specification provides for the whole of the wiring and lamps likely to he required for efficiently lighting not only the Abattoir but also the offices and the three residences for manager, caretaker, and yardsman or engine driver, and for the proper lighting of the stockyards and roads. As an alternative to calling tenders, he submitted the Council indent direct.—lt was decided that tenders bo called.
