SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS OF X || CONDITIONS.

The conditions in certain branches of the railway service were recently considered by'a meeting of twenty-five members of tae House. With a view to improvement; a series of resolutions have been carried, and these will be submitted to the Minister by a deputation. The following recommendation wa,a made !regaiding; wages:—■ . . .-
Crbssingffuid bridge keepers to receive -r/ per, day aijdreut free where homes are provided, .and in all other cases 8/ per day;, junior labourers in traffic and maintenance branches, on attaining 21 years of age, ;tp receive a man's pay; casual r labourers, in goods coalmen to be paid '"overTime, at thjiiratc of time and a-q.uarter for all .work performed before eight a.m.' and. after live iun:7 and time and a-lialf on Sundays, Christmas Day, New Tear's Day, ■Good Friday, ■' and other statutory holidays, and to be £Iyen privilege tickets, provided they nave {worked on tne average 24 tours per week for, the 12 months'previous to the date ofVapplication; cleaners to reeeiye a minimum.of 4/6 per day (Note. —Better provision to"be made for cleaners' stores);brakesmen.vto.be allowed standing time.in the same Sianner as guards and enginedrivers; brlogemen to be allowed to rise :to' a higher.
