OLD CHUMS' AND SCHOOLFELLOWS' p ", *; ...■„;. ASSOCIATION. •
The Old Chums' and Schoolfellows' Association held its annual ball last evening in the Royal Albert Hall, about 150 couples occupying the floor. The function was one of the most enjoyable and successful in the history, of the association, for which much credit is due to the officers and committee, In whose hands were the arrangements. The hall itself , was effectively decorated for the occasion with, bunting, evergreens, and mirrors. Meredith's band discoursed an excellent programme of dance music. Messrs M. J. Bennett, D. Flynn, F. A. Mens, A. Saunders, T. F. Tester, H. Mondy, Geo. Donaldson, and M. Molloy acted_ w as .ILC.'s, while Messrs W. L.~ Moylan and W. Grey acted, respectively ..as secretary and treasurer. .-. CKNEBTJNGA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The annual meeting in connection with the Ohehunga Presbyterian Church was held last evening, there being a good attendance. The managers, in their report, stated that the revenue account, both aa ' regards collections and seat rents, showed an increase over last year, the deficit having been wiped out. The other special collections also showed,increases. A credit balance of £0 remained to the church. They were pleased to report that the classrooms added to the school hall had been erected satisfactorily, and the congregation were indebted to Mr A. Robb for gratuitously planning and superintending the work. The congregations were also grateful to the Ladies' Dorcas Society, the members of which, with able outside assistance, had added £80 to the classrooms fund, by means of a bazaar. The ses--. sions report stated that the thanks of the congregation were due to the leader of the young men's Bible class, Mr H. Perry, and to Mesdames Scott and Cole, of the young women's class. The communicants' roll had increased by 21. The reports were formally adopted. The meeting passed recommendations to the effect that the ladies be asked to form a visitation committee, and that the managers take steps to secure a pipe organ. A motion to adopt the Church Hymnary forthwith, was carried.
AUCKLAND WEST BRANCH. The Auckland West branch of tlie Labour and Liberal Federation . held Its mivntlily meeting in the New Church Hall, Pompalier-terrace. The new tariff -was favourably * commented upon, so far as It provided for reduction of dnties on necessaries of life. Hope was expressed that monopolies should be-so' dealt with that the rednctions made in dnty on snme staples should not go to swell the -dividends, of trusts, but Be a help to the workers. Strong disapproval was expressed at the enormous increase of duty on some goeds. notably boots and slippers, which, hits heavily the poor, and in some cases relieves the rich. A resolution was passea instructing the executive to send a strong protest to trie Minister of Customs and members of the district. A motion was also passed expressing surprise at the remission of 'che sheep-tax, which only falls on squatters having over 1000 sheep at the time, when the price of mutton and wool is snch that they are best able to pay ic. 1.0. G.T. ANNIVERSARY. The third anniversary of the Hope of Grey LyDn and Arch Hill Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held in St. George's Hall on Tuesday night. Sir J. J. Jenkins presided. The following programme was rendered: — Pianoforte duet. Sisters Clark and Andrews: song, Sister Cammell; recitations (2), Sister Barnes: instrumental trio, Sles=rs E. Clark, E. Parker, and Mrs Clark; responses from visiting chief templars; ■scntr Miss Cammell: recitation. Sister Ida Barnes; dialogue, "The Flower Qneen's Co-art," Defence Temple Girls; address, Mr A J Black: violin solo, Mr Parker; snnir Mr" Garland: dumbbell exercise, Defence Temple Girls. Refreshments were provided.
